About Trevor
The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text, and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth and run innovative research, education, and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for over 20 years.
Overview of the role
Our Crisis Workers do the work Trevor was founded to do: they pick up the phone when LGBTQ youth need someone to talk to. TrevorLifeline, the only national crisis intervention and suicide prevention lifeline for LGBTQ young people under 25, operates 24/7 through the hard work of our amazing Crisis Workers. In addition to providing direct crisis counseling, Crisis Workers are responsible for key administrative tasks required to provide high-quality, continuous crisis support.
Please note: Because the Lifeline Crisis Worker role is mission-critical to our organization and because we employ a large number of these positions, we interview for this role even when we don’t have a currently open position. Candidates who complete the interview process will be added to our Eligibility List and we will reach out to you when a position becomes available. Our Recruiters will share more details about the process during the initial phone screen and will keep in close touch throughout the interview process.
Who you are
- Passionate. You care about LGBTQ youth. You care about saving lives. You want to come to work and feel inspired every day. You want to change the world.
- Not easily shaken. You’re someone who can maintain compassion for LGBTQ young people but aren’t easily rattled by high-stress situations and can thrive in a crisis care setting.
- Clear Communicator. You are good with your words and others enjoy speaking with you. You communicate well in person and in writing. You understand that being a good communicator requires active listening.
- Experienced and grounded. You are someone who understands that suicide prevention work is difficult and sometimes taxing. You know how to employ positive self-care and coping skills to keep you strong and engaged.
- Organized and efficient. You know how to multitask successfully. You know how to prioritize and can do so with minimal supervision.
- Empathetic. You care about the well-being of LGBTQ youth and respect those around you regardless of race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, and physical ability.
- Flexible. Our crisis intervention programs are 24/7, so we need life-savers who are willing and able to work late nights into the early morning. Coffee/tea lovers are welcome!
- Team player. You love collaborating. You dig learning from your peers. You’re great at getting/giving respectful and productive feedback from your supervisor and fellow co-workers.
- Upbeat and Fun. You are overflowing with positive energy and make people around feel happy just by being you. The work we do is very serious, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun. We know how to have a good time and you should too.
